The Importance of Tennis Racquet Strings

A graduate of The Fenn School in Concord, Massachusetts, Ethan Bondick gained experience as a member of the school’s varsity tennis team. Currently a student at a Massachusetts high school, Ethan Bondick balances his academic and athletic pursuits with work stringing tennis racquets.

Perhaps even more than the actual tennis racket, strings have an enormous impact on a player’s game. One of the first aspects of a racket's strings that should be considered is the tension. While lower tension stringing provides greater power and less stress on the arm and elbow, it limits control over the ball. Higher string tension, on the other hand, offers more control and is a better choice for hard hitters - the drawback is that playing with a tightly strung racket can cause arm strain or even injury over time.

In addition to choosing the appropriate string tension, players should take care to have rackets restrung on a consistent basis. As a general rule for casual players, rackets should be restrung as many times a year as one plays during the week. For example, a player who is on the court five days a week should have her racket restrung five times each year.
